Improve Brain Function with Coconut Oil
Updated: Aug 5, 2019
Coconut oil has many therapeutic benefits for both humans and animals, but perhaps most impressive of all is its scientifically proven ability to improve brain function in older adults and dogs! This is due to the beneficial fats found in coconut oil known as medium-chain triglycerides, or MCT's.
It's important to understand that MCT's are metabolised differently to other fats,
they are absorbed faster into the bloodstream and thus provide the body with energy rather than being stored as fat,
they readily cross the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) thus providing food and fuel for the brain directly,
they help the body to use Omega-3 fats more efficiently (which is great news for inflammation),
and they are also important for ketone production which can supply the brain with yet another fuel source.
In addition to these powerful beneficial brain effects, coconut oil has also been shown to;
possess antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial effects,
effectively help with weight loss,
reduce gastro-intestinal inflammation,
improve digestion and increase the absorption of fat soluble vitamins,
be of benefit to the skin and coat, (hello shiny!!!)
aid in the treatment of seizure disorders,
and provide a fast and effective non-carbohydrate source of energy
SO HOW MUCH DO I GIVE?
Supplementing in DOGS is easy, just mix some virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil into their food, or make up a batch of delicious coconut oil treats using the recipe below. You can add 1/2 - 1 teaspoon per 5kg of body weight per day.
CATS don't usually like the taste which can be tricky. If you want to give it a go, start with 1/8 (small cat) to 1/4 (large cat) of a teaspoon of coconut oil in their food per day. If your cat goes off their food it's best to just leave it out and discontinue use. If you've already made a batch of treats though, feel free to feed them to the humans in the household, or add them to your smoothies!
THE EASIEST COCONUT OIL TREAT RECIPE EVER
1 Ice-Cube tray
Jar of organic, virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil (liquified)
Blueberries / Cranberries / Spirulina powder
Pop 2-3 berries or 1/4 teaspoon of spirulina powder into the bottom of each ice-cube mould
Cover with liquid coconut oil (we used 1 tablespoon per ice-cube for a 20kg dog)
Carefully put into freezer and allow to set
Pop out 1 berry/spirulina coconut oil ice-cube and add to food bowl per day
Why Blueberries? - these berries are little antioxidant powerhouses. They contain not only anthocyanins (antioxidant pigments that give them their blue colour) but also pterostibene, a powerful antioxidant shown to contain potent cancer-fighting properties in animal studies.
Why Cranberries? - cranberries promote a healthy urinary tract, help to combat urinary tract infections (UTI's), and also contain anti-cancer properties.
Why Spirulina? - this ancient blue-green algae gets its deep green colour from chlorophyll and its blue colour from phycocyanin (we used both green spirulina powder and blue phycocyanin powder in this batch!!!) These incredible pigments are compounds with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-arthritic and liver protective properties. It is also rich in nutrients such as B-vitamins, vitamin E, minerals, chlorophyll, carotenoids, phytonutrients, GLA (gamma-linoleic acid), AND contains 65-71% protein!! (Which is more protein by weight than any other food, and amazingly this protein is also four times more absorbable per gram than the same amount of beef protein!)
